Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

2006 – present

The big one, and the one where the drivetrain changes the accessory rather than just the length. An L2 front-wheel drive and an L2 rear-wheel drive are not the same van.

The vehicle

What it is.

Second generation, the W906, ran from 2006 to 2018. The current third generation is the W907/W910, from 2018. A 2018-registered van can be either, so identify by VIN and not by registration year. The W907-versus-W910 split is reported inconsistently even in the trade — use the type plate.

The current UK range runs to four body lengths — 5,267, 5,932, 6,967 and 7,367 mm — and three roof heights, but availability is tied to drivetrain rather than free: the low roof only on the two shorter bodies, the medium roof across L2 to L4, and the high roof only on L3 and L4 rear-wheel drive. Mercedes' current UK site lists a narrower range than the price list we worked from, so confirm live availability before ordering for a new van.

Barn doors only. We searched specifically for a factory tailgate option on the UK panel van and found none, so tailgate-specific kit does not apply to this vehicle. A 270-degree door option is available on everything but the shortest body.

What we fit and why

How the ranges apply.

Power and electrical

The best-provisioned van we cover. The standard battery is a heavy-duty 92 Ah unit under the driver's seat. A factory auxiliary battery is available in two locations — in the interior, or in the engine compartment, the latter on rear- and all-wheel drive only. Most usefully, pre-wiring for the parameterisable special module, Mercedes' PSM, is standard fitment. That is the engineered interface for aftermarket loads and signals, and it is the sanctioned alternative to splicing into looms. If you are having work done, make sure your installer knows it is there.

Storage and load carrying

Roof kits are generation-specific — see below. Factory mounting rails for a roof rack are a Mercedes option in their own right. Step-in height varies enormously by drivetrain, which decides ramp length, step choice and towbar drop as much as the body does.

Awnings and shelter

The Sprinter's height and flat sides suit a large drive-away or wind-out awning better than any other van here. The constraint is roof height, not the rail.

Lighting

Load-area and work lighting on a long-wheelbase high-roof van is a genuine electrical job. Take heavy loads from the engineered distribution point rather than improvising, and run dedicated negatives.

Two things to get right before you order

Roof kits do not cross the 2018 generation break. The W906 takes one Thule fitting kit and the current van another. Two- and three-bar systems land on specific point pairs and will not transfer. Some long full-length platform racks are catalogued as spanning both generations, which is credible for a rack that bolts to many points along the roof — but not for a two-bar set. One brand that does list both explicitly excludes current-generation medium-wheelbase vans, which is consistent with the wheelbase difference below.

Wheelbase moves with the drivetrain. At an identical 5,932 mm overall length, an L2 front-wheel drive has 3,924 mm between the axles and an L2 rear-wheel drive 3,665 mm. Anything referenced to the axle or the wheel arch — side steps, arch liners, underbody storage, ladder position — is drivetrain-specific, not merely length-specific.

Fitment

The numbers.

Every figure here comes from a manufacturer price list, a manufacturer brochure or an accessory brand's own fitment data. Where a figure could not be sourced, the row says so rather than carrying a number across from a similar vehicle. Roof loads are vehicle limits, not bar ratings, and the vehicle limit always governs — check your own handbook before loading a roof.
