The vehicle
Built on each Transporter generation in turn: T5 from 2005, T5.1 from 2010 to 2015, T6 from 2015, and T6.1 from September 2019 to 2024.
UK trims in the T6 and T6.1 era were Beach (manual aluminium pop-top, no fitted kitchen), Coast (manual pop-top, discontinued worldwide in 2022) and Ocean (electrically operated pop-top and a full fitted kitchen). Both Beach and Ocean carried a rear bench bed plus the roof berth.
The T6 California's specified rear door is a tailgate with window. We could find no factory source either offering or excluding barn doors, so if yours has them, tell us rather than ordering tailgate-specific kit.
The current California, launched in 2024, is built on the T7 Multivan and the MQB platform. It is a different vehicle from the T6.1 California and also, confusingly, a different vehicle from the 2025 Transporter, which is Ford-based. The Grand California is a separate model again, on the Crafter, with a fixed roof.
What we fit and why
The California's strongest hand. A black awning rail and tent adapter are fitted as standard on Beach and Ocean, so an awning mounts to the rail, needs no drilling, and the pop-top does not get in the way. C-channel connector inserts and awning-rail hooks are made specifically for this rail. A standard Transporter needs the rail as an option or an aftermarket fit — the California does not.
Bars do fit the pop-top: VW's own specification lists mounting rails on the roof, described as preparation for a movable roof rack, standard on Beach and Ocean. It is a T-track, so fittings slide in. Choose by weight, not by rating — see below. Note also that some fixpoint feet stand around 13 cm above the rail, which raises your effective height.
The California arrived with its own leisure electrics, so aftermarket power here is mostly about portable power stations, additional 12V outlets and charging, rather than the split-charge install a panel van needs.
Interior lighting is factory. The gap is outside: awning, tailgate and ground lighting.
The permissible load on a California's elevating roof is 50 kg, and that figure includes the carrier bars and the box, not just what you put inside them. Genuine VW carriers for this roof weigh around 5 kg the pair.
Aftermarket bar kits for the same vehicle are rated and advertised at 100 kg, crash-tested to that figure, and most listings do not mention the vehicle limit at all. The bar rating is not permission. The 50 kg vehicle figure governs.
Two further points from installers rather than from VW, so treat them as advice and not specification: do not raise a manual roof under a heavy load, and consider stronger gas struts if the roof will carry more than light luggage. VW publishes no rule on raising a loaded roof, and we are not going to make one up.
Fitment
Table 1 — Fitment summary
| Generations | T5 2005–2010, T5.1 2010–2015, T6 2015–2019, T6.1 2019–2024, T7-based from 2024 |
|---|---|
| UK trims | Beach (manual pop-top), Coast (manual, discontinued 2022), Ocean (electric pop-top, kitchen) |
| Roof bar interface | T-track mounting rails on the elevating roof, standard on Beach and Ocean. VW lists it as preparation for a movable roof rack |
| Roof load | 50 kg maximum on the elevating roof, including the carrier bars and the box. Verified for T5, T6 and T6.1 |
| Awning rail | Black awning rail and tent adapter, standard on Beach and Ocean |
| Rear doors | Tailgate with window is the specified fitment. Barn doors neither confirmed nor excluded — check the vehicle |
| Current model | 2024-on California is built on the T7 Multivan, MQB platform. No published roof-load figure found; do not assume 50 kg carries over |
Every figure here comes from a manufacturer price list, a manufacturer brochure or an accessory brand's own fitment data. Where a figure could not be sourced, the row says so rather than carrying a number across from a similar vehicle. Roof loads are vehicle limits, not bar ratings, and the vehicle limit always governs — check your own handbook before loading a roof.
