The vehicle
Revealed in March 2019, on sale in the UK from March 2020, production ended in 2023/24. Sources differ on the final year; both agree it has ceased.
Unchanged from the T5 and T6: roof fixing points, bodyshell, wheelbases, rear-door options and battery location. Roof carriers, awning rails, side bars and load-area products carry across the whole 2003–2024 span.
Genuinely changed, and it affects fitment: hydraulic power steering was replaced by an electromechanical system, which is what enables Trailer Assist and is why towbar and trailer-electrics retrofits behave differently here. The dashboard is entirely new with MIB3 infotainment, so no interior fitment swaps with a T6. And a load-through hatch under the passenger seat adds around 400 mm of usable load length.
UK range: short wheelbase in normal roof only; long wheelbase in normal or high roof, the high roof giving 1,940 mm interior height and 9.3 m³. There is no medium roof in the T6.1 range.
What we fit and why
Standard battery is 70 Ah / 420 A with a 140 A alternator; an uprated battery and alternator up to 250 A was a factory option, and worth having if you knew at order time. Electrically the T6.1 behaves as a T6 — battery-to-battery charger, not a relay. VW's own brochure lists only an uprated single battery, so if you have been told your van has a factory second battery, check it before designing around it.
The load-through under the passenger seat is genuinely useful for long loads, and it also constrains where a leisure battery or a charger can live. Worth planning before you buy either.
As the family: rail-mounted, optional or aftermarket, fitted to the body.
One 12V socket standard, a second in the centre storage compartment optional. A 230V socket in the driver's seat base was also on the options list.
Production ended in 2023/24. The Transporter Volkswagen has sold in the UK since April 2025 is a different vehicle: it is built on the Ford Pro platform, shares its underpinnings with the second-generation Ford Transit Custom, and is assembled by Ford Otosan in Turkey. Wheelbases, lengths and roof load are all different.
Nothing on this page carries over to it. We are not yet listing that van, because no accessory brand we could find has published fitment for the VW-badged version, and we are not going to guess from the Ford data.
Fitment
Table 1 — Fitment summary
| Years | Revealed March 2019, UK on sale March 2020, production ended 2023/24 |
|---|---|
| Load length | 2,572 mm short wheelbase, 2,975 mm long; the load-through adds about 400 mm |
| Roof heights | Short wheelbase: normal only. Long wheelbase: normal or high (1,940 mm interior, 9.3 m³) |
| Roof bar interface | Unchanged from T5 and T6 — factory fixing points, or T-profile where rails are fitted |
| Roof load | 100 kg on two roof carriers, 150 kg on four or more. Normal roof only |
| Rear doors | Barn doors without windows standard. Options: barn doors with window, tailgate with or without window, electric tailgate |
| Battery | Under the driver's seat. 70 Ah / 420 A standard, up to 250 A alternator optional |
| Towbar wiring | Catalogued separately from the T6. Confirm the part with the loom supplier rather than assuming a T6 kit fits |
Every figure here comes from a manufacturer price list, a manufacturer brochure or an accessory brand's own fitment data. Where a figure could not be sourced, the row says so rather than carrying a number across from a similar vehicle. Roof loads are vehicle limits, not bar ratings, and the vehicle limit always governs — check your own handbook before loading a roof.
