VW Transporter T6

2015 – 2019

A new face and a new dashboard on the T5's platform. The roof did not change, and that is what matters for most of what we sell.

The vehicle

What it is.

Revealed in April 2015, order books open that July, UK arrival in September 2015. Same platform as the T5, same wheelbases, same roof fixing points.

Load length is 2,575 mm on the short wheelbase and 2,975 mm on the long.

Three roof heights at launch. The medium roof was discontinued in early 2018 for lack of UK demand, and short-wheelbase high-roof availability ended at the same time — so a medium-roof T6 is a 2015–2018 van.

Barn doors are standard, opening to 180 degrees with an option to extend to 250. A top-hinged tailgate is the alternative.

What we fit and why

How the ranges apply.

Power and electrical

The T6 has a smart alternator with a battery management system controlled by the engine ECU, and output varies between roughly 12.5 and 14.9 volts. A traditional voltage-sensing split-charge relay is not suitable on this van — it needs a battery-to-battery charger. This is the most common single mistake on a T6 conversion, and it is the reason a leisure battery that never quite charges is usually a wiring problem rather than a battery problem.

Storage and load carrying

Roof fixing points are identical to the T5 and the T6.1: the same Thule fix-point kit, the same Rhino-Rack leg kit and the same Front Runner platform are catalogued across all three. Battery under the driver's seat, as the whole family.

Awnings and shelter

As the T5 — the awning rail is an option or an aftermarket fit, and it mounts to the body rather than to the roof bars.

Lighting

One 12V socket as standard on most specifications. Anything beyond a phone charger is a new circuit.

Fitment

The numbers.

Table 1 — Fitment summary

Years2015 to 2019; UK from September 2015
Load length2,575 mm short wheelbase, 2,975 mm long
Roof heightsLow, medium and high at launch. Medium discontinued early 2018
Roof bar interfaceFactory fixing points in the roof gully; T-profile where rails are fitted. Same as T5 and T6.1
Roof load100 kg on two roof carriers, 150 kg on four or more. Normal roof only (VW figure, T6 family)
Rear doorsBarn doors standard, 180 degrees with a 250-degree option; tailgate optional
BatteryUnder the driver's seat, 12V
Split chargingBattery-to-battery charger. A voltage-sensing relay is unsuitable
Not interchangeableFront-end and dashboard fitments are T6-specific and do not swap with a T5 or a T6.1

Every figure here comes from a manufacturer price list, a manufacturer brochure or an accessory brand's own fitment data. Where a figure could not be sourced, the row says so rather than carrying a number across from a similar vehicle. Roof loads are vehicle limits, not bar ratings, and the vehicle limit always governs — check your own handbook before loading a roof.
